Nameserver Management

Domain registration is separate from nameserver function.  Your domain always remains registered with a domain registrar.  What is done with that domain once it is registered revolves around the nameservers that are assigned to it.

Once your domain is registered, you will need to decide what you want your domain to do.  The function of both web browser resolution and email features of your domain are controlled by the nameservers.

Using Our Nameservers and Free Features

When you first register a new domain with bulkdomains.com, your domain defaults to our nameservers.  If you choose to use our nameservers, you can take advantage of the many free features we offer as added value beyond your domain registration.  These include free email forwarding, web site pointing and IP address pointing.

Multiple domain nameservers are located at different locations throughout the United States. Each of these locations has multiple high-bandwidth Internet connections, battery or diesel generator back-up power, security, and access to three different major Internet backbones. These dispersed, redundant name servers give the ability to always delegate your names, with no interruptions in service. Great lengths have been taken to make sure at least one of our name servers is up at all times. The names of our nameservers are as follows:

Server Name
Primary DNS1.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Secondary DNS2.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Secondary DNS3.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Secondary DNS4.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Secondary DNS5.NAME-SERVICES.COM

Using Other Outside Nameservers

You have the option of changing or updating to outside nameservers 24/7.  You may want to use outside nameservers if you are using a traditional web hosting company or if you have your own nameservers.

A web hosting company may say to you that you need to "transfer" you domain to them.  This is often confusing.  What they mean to say is that you need to transfer or update to their nameservers.  This is not a domain registration transfer, just a selection to use their nameservers.

Please note: once you update your domain control panel to use outside nameservers other than our nameservers, we totally lose the control and function of that domain (the registration of course still remains with us). In other words, we cannot troubleshoot email problems and/or web browser resolution problems.

DNS Control Panel Management

You can easily update or change nameserver information for free through the domain control panel for each domain you have registered with us.

For Wholesale Plus Account members login to your account. Click on "domain names" - then select the domain you want to manage.  Under the first box labeled "DNS Server" click on "Change".

For Express Account domains, login to your domain and click on "Nameservers".

Follow the instructions below:

Insuring Proper  Nameserver Updates & Changes

1 ) When you type in your new outside nameservers in the control panel, only type in the nameserver names such as "ns1.yourdomain.com" - Do not include the IP addresses.  If you do type in the IP addresses, it will cause an error and your changes will not take place.  (if your nameserver is registered properly - see #3 - the Internet registry knows the IP address associated with your nameserver name.)

2 )  Please note that once your changes are saved, it may take 24- 48 hours for your nameserver changes to be updated across the Internet.  Keep checking on web browser resolution and email function to test when your nameservers have been fully updated in the Internet registry made available to all Internet service providers.

3 ) Make sure your nameservers are valid.  You can check this by going to http://nsiregistry.com . In the upper right hand column, type in the nameserver name such as "ns1.yourdomain.com" - click on "Nameservers.  This will verify the registration of the specific nameserver.  If the nameserver has not been registered and you try and enter it in your domain control panel, you may receive an error message.

Registering Your Own Nameserver

If you have a Wholesale Plus Account, you can register your domain name as a nameserver from within your account and even update your nameserver with new IP addresses.

Login to your account.  Next, click on "domain names" on the left menu bar.  Next, click on "register DNS".  Type in the nameserver name such as "ns1.yourdomain.com" and your specific static IP address.  (The IP address must be static).  We will register your nameserver with the Internet registry on your behalf.  It may take 24- 48 hours for your nameserver changes to be updated across the Internet.

If you have an Express Account, please email the information in the above paragraph to "info@bulkdomains.com" and we will manually register it for you.

Nameserver Function And Domain Registration Transfers

When a domain name registration is transferred the current nameservers are not changed or updated.  In this way if you use a web hosting company, there will be no downtime in the registration transfer.  Once the domain is transferred, you can of course update the nameservers 24/7 from your domain control panel.

After a domain transfer is complete and successful you can update or change the nameservers to use our nameservers.

Differences Between Domain Hosting And Web Hosting

There is a difference between "domain hosting" and "web hosting".  Domain hosting refers to the nameservers that your domain name is directed to.  The basic nameserver functions include email capabilities and website / browser resolution of the domain name.  Web hosting refers to the web content of a web site.

In a common traditional setting, the nameservers of a web hosting company are used.  However, web site content can still be published onto pages provided by a web hosting company and the domain name (if on our nameservers) can be pointed or redirected to any specific page on the Internet or unique IP address.

Domain Registration Is Like
A Driver's Licence

In the U.S. you receive your license from a certain state such as Virginia.  This is similar to your domain registration.  You still need a car (nameserver) and some roads to travel on (the Internet)!

With our domain registration we give you an optional bonus - we give you a free car to drive anywhere you would like (using our nameservers with free features).  If your car breaks down - we are your AAA Premium Travel Service - we will be able to troubleshoot any problems because it is our car.

You may want to choose a car you already have or someone else is providing for you (using outside nameservers).  Of course, your license (like a domain registration) still is the same and remains with us.  The difference is if your car breaks down, we can't really help you with what's under the hood.

A Case Study

Here is an example of why someone might consider using our nameservers.  Recently one of our sites was pointing to the IP address of a well established hosting company.  Unfortunately as sometimes can happen on the Internet, their servers went down for almost a complete day.

Since we had the domain at our nameservers we were able to quickly republish the content to another hosting account we had with another company and "redirected" the domain name in less than 5 minutes.  This greatly diminished the downtime of our site, because of the control we had to change the web site redirection.

If the domain had been assigned to the nameservers of the hosting company, even if we had wanted to change nameservers, it would have taken a minimum of 24 to 48 hours for the nameserver changes to be updated or "propogated" across the Internet.  This would have resulted in a lengthy downtime for our site.

Web Pointing To Free Web Sites

Another common option is for people to design web site content on free sites and then use our nameservers to point to their web content - all for free.

Some web sites that offer free space for web content include:

http://ww.geocities.com

http://www.tripod.com

http://www.homestead.com

This is an awesome feature.  For more information please click on web site pointing.
